Plant-based or Vegan? Which is Correct?

Navigating a restaurant menu with my husband can sometimes be an adventure.

The confusion starts when I ask our server about plant-based options or if a dish can be modified. My husband often chimes in, "She's vegan." That phrase often sparks a debate between us once the server is out of earshot. It's not that I'm ashamed; it's the accuracy of the term that I grapple with, especially while sporting my leather accessories.

Being labelled vegan or plant-based can generate various responses and misconceptions, often depending on where in the world you are. I've been eating plant-based for around fifteen years, yet the terminology can still be confusing.

Being vegan isn't just a dietary choice. It's a lifestyle that refrains from harming animals in any possible way. So, can I genuinely call myself a vegan while holding onto a leather handbag? It seems contradictory. It's true. Some vegans are quick to judge and vocalize their opinions publicly. However, I believe this represents a minority. Regardless of their diet, most people understand that everyone is on a personal journey and that learning and change take time.

My decision to embrace plant-based eating originated from health concerns. With over thirty years of experience as a nurse, I've seen the impacts of lifestyle choices on chronic conditions and hospital admissions. Adopting a whole food plant-based diet seemed like a logical step towards preventing diseases like Alzheimer's and Type 2 Diabetes.

This journey led me to understand better the ethical implications of our dietary choices, especially regarding animal welfare. Modern farming is far from the idyllic scenes of "Little House on the Prairie." As such, I lean towards veganism, yet I'm still eliminating all animal products. Equally, I'm conscious about avoiding fast fashion and sourcing non-animal products wherever possible.

This transition is not without its challenges. While I don't want to harm animals, I'm also cautious about introducing toxic chemicals into my life and our planet. Despite their cruelty-free tag, many vegan products aren't necessarily healthy or sustainable. Navigating these issues can be complex, but I'm growing more comfortable in these conversations.

The journey has been a mix of trial and error, and the most important thing is the intent behind our decisions. We all have different stories and challenges. What's your take on this? I'd love to hear your thoughts on veganism and plant-based lifestyle choices.
