Have you ever had a moment when you hear something, see something and you think to yourself - this is perfect. Why didn’t I know about this before??

This happened to me last spring.

While listening to one of my favourite podcasts, The Exam Room Podcast, I had the pleasure of coming across a Health Coach being interviewed. She spoke about her struggles with health and weight, and revealed that she was a Food for Life Instructor for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). My ears perked up when I heard this as I am quite familiar with PCRM. I have the Physicians Committee app for healthcare providers on my phone and refer to it often when discussing health related issues with my patients. Their website is one of my go-to sources for up-to-date health-related information for myself and my patients.

The president of this non-profit organization, Dr. Neal Barnard, is also the author of several books on health. One of his books, Power Foods for the Brain, was the catalyst for me to become plant-based several years ago. So, needless to say, I was very interested in what the Health Coach had to say about the Food for Life program.

She talked about how she loved being a Licensed Food for Life Instructor and how she loves teaching others how to cook healthy plant-based meals. I had not heard about this before, and was eager to learn more. Then they said that the deadline for applying for the course was the next day!

I raced to work and immediately looked up the Food for Life program and completed the extensive application process, which required a video submission as well. Thanks to my YouTube videos, I was able to submit the required video.

Months later, I was informed I had successfully made it through the first phase and would next have to pass an interview. After getting through the interview process, I went through a criminal record check and started the course in early fall.

I learned so much going through this program, and I now enjoy teaching live Zoom classes online. There is nothing better than connecting with people over nutrition and health in the comfort of their own home.

Food for Life is an award-winning nutrition education and cooking class program that provides an innovative approach to diet-related chronic diseases. Since 2001, Food for Life has been a pioneer in delivering hands-on information about the direct role of plant-based nutrition in health and disease prevention to communities around the world

Taking this course has helped me really cement the information I have learned over the past decade, as well as allowed me to incorporate all the information from my nursing career.

If you’re interested in taking a class either in person or online, you can visit the PCRM website, which has all upcoming classes posted.

If you’re interested in becoming a Food for Life Instructor, you can also find this information on the PCRM website.
